April 2026

Dear Readers,
In adult general education, success is rarely linear and it is never one-size-fits-all. Every learner who walks into our classrooms brings a unique story, a distinct pace, and a different definition of achievement. For some, success is mastering a new concept; for others, it’s the confidence to try, to persist, or to simply return the next day.
Assessment then becomes much more than a measure of performance. It becomes a tool for recognizing growth in all of its forms. When we assess with pedagogical intention, we create space to value progress over perfection, to see effort alongside outcomes, and to perceive learning as an evolving journey rather than a final destination.
As educators and consultants, your role is essential in shaping these moments. By embracing diverse ways of demonstrating understanding, you help ensure that every learner’s progress is seen, acknowledged, and celebrated. Together, we can continue to build practices that honor the richness of adult learning and reinforce a powerful message: success is not singular—it is a succession of steps taken along the way.
Let’s continue to assess not just to measure, and to move learners forward.

FRANCISATION – Projet « Ma SA en 180 secondes »
Volunteers needed.
The project « Les SA de la relève » gives FSL teacher‑education students at Université Laval the opportunity to design innovative Learning Situations (LS) for the Francisation curriculum.
This year, we’re inviting you to discover a series of dynamic, three‑minute video capsules in which students present the LS they created during the session. We’re looking for volunteers to watch these short presentations and share their comments as constructive feedback. Your insights will offer future teachers valuable, real‑world perspectives from experienced educators — a fantastic opportunity for them to grow and refine their work.

Assess to Progress: Measuring what truly matters
By Miriam Furfaro
Assessment isn’t just about measuring the outcomes, but rather a tool to drive learning. In adult education and vocational training, our adult clientele usually come to us with rich life experiences and diverse goals.
More often than not, assessment is treated as a standard checkpoint: a way to validate learning at the end of a course or competency. But what if assessment could be more than that? What if it became the tool that drives meaningful progress? A tool to measure what truly matters: skills, confidence, adaptability, and real-world readiness.
This concept differs from traditional assessment by:
- Providing continuous feedback rather than a one-time evaluation
- Factoring in prior knowledge and lived experience
- Focusing on skill mastery in real-world contexts
- Building confidence through progress tracking
- Personalizing learning pathways
- Promoting learner autonomy and responsibility
Unfortunately, traditional assessment often emphasizes memorization over application, standardization over personalization, and final outcomes over personal growth. In last month’s newsletter – where we touched upon all the small steps adding up to a big win – it becomes evident that, as professionals, we play a key role in guiding clientele towards achieving their goals. SARCA serves as a structured roadmap guiding them from the initial reception through to ongoing support.
While traditional assessment must continue to take place in the classroom, professionals can provide concrete and effective feedback to assist our clientele in their educational journeys and give them clear next steps to promote their motivation and personal growth. We can help them move forward.
When we measure what truly matters, we don’t just evaluate progress—we enable it!
